Minneapolis Hiawatha Line Light Rail Vehicle

I have participated as a part of the design and engineering team for the Minneapolis new LRV. The design team had to satisfy a wide range of issues, ranging from cultural integration to ergonomics, environment, safety, accessibility (wheelchair/bicycle access), weight, fire control, and sustainability in the long term, among others.

The train is composed of individual cars; each of them has four doorways and can hold 66 seated passengers plus standing room for 120. Inside each car are four luggage racks and four bicycle hangers.

Light-rail vehicles for the Hiawatha Line have been rolling along the line for testing and training purposes since late 2003. In 2005 the line started working officially. In 2005 the train’s ridership was19, 300 per weekday.
